Het Verdrag van Washington inzake de internationale handel in bedreigde soorten wilde dieren en planten, beter bekend als CITES, heeft als doel bepaalde planten- en diersoorten te beschermen door hun internationale handel te reguleren en te controleren, zodat deze niet tot onhoudbare niveaus stijgt. Het Verdrag trad in werking in 1975, en het Verenigd Koninkrijk werd partij in 1976. Beschrijving Bijlage A – Alle soorten opgenomen in Bijlage I van CITES. Daarnaast sommige soorten uit Bijlage II en III van CITES waarvoor de EU strengere nationale maatregelen heeft aangenomen. Ook enkele niet-CITES-soorten. Beschrijving Bijlage B – Alle overige soorten uit Bijlage II van CITES die niet in Bijlage A staan. Sommige soorten uit Bijlage III van CITES. Ook enkele niet-CITES-soorten. Beschrijving Bijlage C – Alle overige soorten uit Bijlage III van CITES die niet zijn opgenomen in Bijlage A of Bijlage B. Beschrijving Bijlage D – Sommige soorten uit Bijlage III van CITES waarvoor de EU een voorbehoud heeft gemaakt (CITES-voorbehouden – Engels, Frans, Spaans). Ook enkele niet-CITES-soorten.
